Guided mountain bike excursion in Sicily in the municipality of Capo d'Orlando.
The departure will be from the splendid tourist port of Capo d'Orlando, where, in addition to enjoying the enchanting scenery, you can admire the Cave del Mercadante, large stone rocks that probably once served as millstones.
Here, after a short briefing, during which the itinerary will be presented, the bikes will be put in place to ensure maximum fun and comfort. Once started, along the route we will pass by the Roman baths of Bagnoli, discovered in 1987 after several excavation operations that brought to light the first ruins of a thermal structure, belonging to an ancient Roman villa dating back to the 3rd-4th century AD.
We will proceed through the picturesque seaside village of San Gregorio, considered by many to be the most beautiful beach in Capo d'Orlando, so much so that it inspired the famous Genoese singer-songwriter Gino Paoli to write the words to the song Sapore di sale, written here in the 1960s. We will then stop at the ice cream parlour of the same name to treat ourselves to some typical local specialities.
Along the sea route, you can admire the Capo d'Orlando Lighthouse, which has always been a reference point for fishermen on the coast and a symbol of the town, together with the Monte della Madonna which houses the sanctuary of Maria SS, the patron saint of Capo d'Orlando, on its summit.
When we reach the end of the Paladin seafront, we start our light off-road ride by taking a nature trail that emerges from the beach, giving us the sensation of riding on the water of the warm Tyrrhenian Sea for about a kilometre.
At the end, the most challenging part of our ride begins, we will climb the hill that will lead us to the Museum "Villa Piccolo", a splendid nineteenth-century palace well preserved that was the home of the family Piccolo di Calanovella cousins of the famous poet Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa, author of the novel "Il Leopard". which was partly written within these very walls.
The villa is set against an enchanting natural backdrop in a botanical garden created by Baroness Agata, which still preserves original species of rare plants, surrounded by a countryside of olive and citrus trees. Particularly important is the unique Dog Cemetery, which is just a few steps from the villa and where you can visit and admire the ever-fresh flowers on the graves of the four-legged friends who enlivened the festive days.
Once the visit to the Museo dei Piccolo is over, we set off again through the park, heading for the "Bosco Amola", a wonderful natural park full of paths with centuries-old chestnut, oak and strawberry trees, where you will be welcomed by a tasty aperitif with typical local products.
The next stop is the Castello Bastione, a mighty castle measuring approximately 16 metres by 16 metres, dating back to the second half of the 16th century, situated on a plateau above the Malvicino district and built to defend the cinnamon plantations from pirate raids.
We will resume cycling in the direction of the sea, reaching the Paladino seafront through the legendary Sicilian citrus groves, where you can admire and be overwhelmed by the typical scents of the Sicilian countryside, especially during the orange blossom season.
Finally, we will return to the Capo d'Orlando tourist port where, in addition to the greetings, a pleasant gastronomic surprise will await us.
